Prerequisite Course(s): None. Successful completion of Basic Handgun and Intermediate Pistol is strongly suggested. Most students fail Defensive Pistol 1 without these suggested courses.
Prerequisite Skills: Firm understanding of safe firearm handling. Firm understanding of basic handgun manipulation.
Prerequisite Test: Prior to the course date, an online test will be sent to students who are registered for Defensive Pistol 1.  If a student does not pass the online test they will not be permitted to attend the course until they successfully complete one of our suggested courses. The student will have their choice of a full refund or credit for another course.

About the Course

WARNING: This is not a beginner course! We strongly suggest all participants successfully complete Intermediate Pistol prior to starting the Defensive Pistol Series. Please read the above prerequisites.


This course is the first course in a four-part series. Defensive Pistol 1 reemphasizes the fundamentals of firearm handling while introducing defensive skills throughout the course.

The skills gained in this course are also extremely beneficial to students wishing to improve their shooting skills and manipulation of the handgun. If you have received your Concealed Handgun Permit, or intend to do so, we strongly recommend that you take this course. Remember, this is not a beginner course!


Fundamental Review Topics:
Shooting stance, roles of the hands, grip, eye dominance, sight alignment, shot placement, and trigger control.

Defensive Skills Taught:
The punch-out, workspace, initial load and status check, emergency reload, and clearing malfunctions.

Earmuffs are required to be worn while inside the range. Earplugs are not considered to be sufficient ear protection when worn alone.

Training Policies

Registration Policy

  • Registration for all courses ends two days prior to the course date.

  • Student information provided during registration must reflect information as it's printed on photo identification.

  • If you are paying for an additional student, please make sure you include their full name, telephone number and email address. This is how we confirm our rosters and completed waivers. Accurate information expedites our course check-in process.

Rescheduling/Cancellation Policy

  • A minimum of 48-hours notice must be given to a Triangle Shooting Academy Education Coordinator to avoid forfeiting your course payment.

  • If notification is given 48-hours prior to your scheduled course, students may be rescheduled for a future course or receive a full refund. If a student wishes to reschedule, they may reschedule the course once. Multiple reschedules are not permitted.

  • If the 48-hour window has closed and a student cancels their seat due to a medical emergency, the student must provide a doctor's note stating they could not attend that specific date/time.
